2017
sees The Machines celebrating their 40th year. Formed in Spring '77 by
Nick Paul on Guitar & Vocals, with Duf on Bass and John Dee on Drums,
The Machines played their first gig on August 28th, 1977 at The Queens
Hotel in Westcliff. They soon gathered momentum and played several other
local gigs before heading to London to play the City Poly and then London
Punk Club The Vortex later that year. Two Demo tracks were recorded in
1977, and in 1978 the band recorded their Four Track debut EP - 'True
Life'- on Wax Records. The band also played The Roxy in Covent Garden
as well as several more local shows before Nick split the band.
In 2006, the two 1977 Demo Recordings were released on Detour Records
compilation album 'Bored Teenagers Volume 4', and Nick, together with
Stephen 'Tash' Reddihough on Bass and Steve Pegrum (aka Steve Machine)
on Drums played the launch party at the Boston Arms in London for the
aforementioned album on September 10th.
With The Machines playing as many gigs as possible, they played several
notable local shows, as well as further afield in London, Brighton etc
and in 2008 played The Rebellion Festival in Blackpool. 2011 saw the release
of their debut album, containing all the tracks listed below which represent
all the bands studio output. (Tracks 01 - 10 were recorded in 2007. Tracks
11-12 were recorded in 1977 and tracks 13 - 16 were recorded in 1978).
